The new iPhone 7 – Hits and misses

iphone 7

This new baby from Apple, the iPhone 7, although it looks like its other siblings, has a totally different soul, breaking all the conventions and stereotypes of the iPhone.  Before its launch, Apple fans were expecting a major change in appearance and design of the device, and what they actually received was a disappointment.  Delving deeper into the device and its features, a sigh of relief can be taken.  In reference to the new Apple iPhone 7, the only words that best suits its description is “future reaching”.  A powerful punch is packed under the hood of the iPhone 7 to welcome in the new age of technology and features.

To go further into details, let’s discuss the hits and misses of this new Apple beauty.

Design and appearance:

Physically the new Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus has the same size and design as its predecessors the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus respectively. The new iPhone 7 measures 138.3 X 67.1 X 7.1mm in size and is IP67 certified which makes it dust resistant and water resistant up to 1 meter depth and 30 minutes duration.  The device has an aluminum unibody with curved edges that makes its sit comfortably in the palm of your hand. In addition, with a 138g weight, the phone is extremely light to carry in your pocket or purse.  In order to make the phone more durable, lightweight, and eye-catching, Apple has used 7000 Series aluminum.

Now let’s examine some of the improvements made to the design and overall appearance.  First of all, the device has redesigned antennas with back lines being tweaked and colored so that they get blended with the body. Second, the bump of the camera has been made of the same aluminum that is used for the housing of the device that ultimately makes the camera look seamless. Also, the bump has been curved more smartly and has been enlarged. The major change is bidding goodbye to the headphone jack.  The jack’s removal has indeed paved way for a new and improved home button and a larger battery.  Instead of the headphone jack, you can use the latest Lightning Earpods that are packaged with the device. To listen to your favorite music, you can use either wireless headphones or the lightning headphones, or simply plug in the traditional headphone to the lightning jack using a 3.5mm lightning adapter.

Home button:

Moving to the next topic, let’s talk about the new home button, the much talked about feature of the iPhone 7. The new home button does not move when you press it, and is basically a linear vibration unit called a Taptic Engine. This new system of the home button is similar to the ones which are used on latest MacBook trackpads.   The new home button is mainly a flush input and is not really a button at all but receives input from the user through a touch ID ring around it.  With the new home button, you do not need to move it up and down; simply pressing it activates the Taptic Engine. Your fingers are made to “think” that button is being pressed.  The way the home button reacts to your touch can be customized to some extent.  Overall using the home button on the iPhone 7 is a new and different experience which can be a little unnerving during initial use.

Display:

Measuring 4.7 inches in size, the iPhone 7 display features LED backlit IPS LCD with capacitive touchscreen, multitouch, ion-strengthened glass with an oleophobic coating, 3D touch display, and 16M color support with 750 X 1334 pixels resolution and 326 PPI pixel density.

The display of the device has been made 25% brighter, which makes it easy to use it in direct sunlight. To further enhance the experience, the latest DCI-P3 color gamut has been used, which makes the display crisp, clear, and colorful.

Processor and performance:

The performance of the iPhone 7 is powered by the new A10 Fusion chip that comes loaded with the device and is notably the first quad-core processor used for iPhones.  Getting into more detail, the A10 is a 64-bit quad-core chipset comes packed with two high-performance core and two high-efficiency low power cores. The 2 high-performance cores works 40% faster compared to the A9 chip whereas the low power cores use less battery power while you perform everyday tasks.  Thus these latest processors are highly efficient as they deliver enhanced performance using less power.   The device runs on latest iOS 10.0.1 which can be upgraded to iOS 10.3. With 2GB RAM, the internal memory capacities have also been doubled with base model having 32GB, middle tier having 128GB and the top model packed with 256GB of storage. So no more struggling with space while organizing your favorite photos and important documents.

Camera, Audio, and other multimedia options:

For the photography enthusiast, the iPhone 7 is definitely a treat. Apple has completely revamped the camera with an array of impressive features. The phone comes loaded with the 12MP camera that features quad LED flash, phase detection autofocus, geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video and 8MP image recording, and HDR.  The camera sensor is 60% faster and 30% more energy efficient that allows for taking good quality images even in low light conditions. The optical image stabilization on the device works across both photo and video modes.  Other striking features include an f/1.8 aperture, 6-element lens, and 7MP front facing camera. Although the iPhone 7 does not have a dual lens camera like iPhone 7 Plus, its performance is impressive.

Regarding audio, we have already discussed the major change in the removal of the headphone jack.  The phone features stereo speakers which are 50% louder, compared to earlier iPhone models.

The iPhone 7 features the new W1 chip which is the latest wireless technology used across all Apple devices and allows pairing one device to the other by simply placing them near each other.

Battery:

The iPhone 7 gets powered by the Li-ion 1960 mAh battery that Apple claims can deliver 14 hours of talk time and up to 40 hours of standby time. The battery on the iPhone 7 runs 2 hours extra in comparison to the iPhone 6S, which is definitely a welcomed improvement.

Color options:

The iPhone 7 and 7Plus are available in multiple color options including Black, Jet Black, standard gold, silver, and Rose Gold.  The Jet Black model is available only in the 128GB and 256GB storage variant while others are available across all storage capacities (32GB, 128GB, and 256GB).

In addition to the 5 colors mentioned above, Apple added a new limited edition Red device in March 2017. The red iPhone 7 edition has been launched in partnership with the HIV/AIDS organization (Product) RED and with its matte finish, it looks stunningly awesome. The matte red variant, like the Jet black model, is available only in 128 and 256GB versions.

Conclusion:

Overall, it can be concluded that the iPhone 7 is an upgraded version of iPhone 6, and the device manages to have some amazing hits along with a few misses as well. The areas where the device leaves its impression includes: an improved camera, a better battery life, a quad core A10 Fusion chip, water resistance capabilities, a taptic engine for the home button, and a crisp display.

Some misses that sent a wave of disappointment among users include removal of the headphone jack, no major changes in appearance compared to iPhone 6, and the Jet black model getting scratched easily.
