Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet Review

Sony has recently come up with its latest tablet dubbed the Sony Xperia Z2 which is touted by the company to be the slimmest and lightest waterproof tablet found across the globe. Packed with an impressive spec sheet, the device will surely prove to be a helpful companion while travelling. Below is a detailed review of this device.

Design and appearance

Measuring 266 X 172 X 6.4mm in size, the tablet weighs around 439 grams and is definitely one of the thinnest device that you can hold in one hand without feeling any strain.  The first thing that comes to the mind while holding this tablet in your hands is how razor thin and light it is.  Talking visually, the tablet looks like a big brother of the Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone and features the same boxy design that is based on the Sony Omni balance.

With an all glass design, the device comes with a button free front panel and its back panel features soft touch textured plastic that provides a decent grip. Maintaining a 16:9 aspect ratio, black bezels surround the screen.

The headphone port in the device is placed at the bottom edge and is open while the slots for microUSB charging and microSD have rubber sealed doors. A magnetic dock connector is also present on the left edge for all those who do not wish to charge the phone through a micro-USB socket.  An infrared blaster is also present on the top that enables the user to use their tablet as a TV remote control.

The tablet comes with an IP58 certification which makes it dust proof and water resistant, which means it can be immersed in fresh water to a depth of 1.5m for around 30 minutes.  So now while working with the device you will not have to worry if you accidently spill your cup of coffee all over it and you can even carry it into your bathtub or shower with you. Just make sure that the USB and the microSD ports are covered with the rubber flaps if you’re going to get it all wet.

The Sony Xperia Z2 tablet comes accessorized with a 10.1-inch full HD display offering resolution count of 1920 X 1200 pixels along with a pixel density of 224 pixels per inch. The crisp and clear display of the device with an impressive brightness makes the content appear stunning.  The Triluminous display technology in the device enhances the content quality and offers bolder and brighter colors while its Live Color LED technology makes colors more natural as well as richer. The IPS technology in the tablet offers better viewing angles while it’s X-reality for mobile delivers sharp images.  Made up of shatter proof and scratch resistant glass the display also features Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2.

Running on the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS, the tablet is powered by Qualcomm MSM8974AB Snapdragon 801 quad core processor ticking at a speed of 2.3 GHz. Some customizations are also made by Sony to the standard Android OS which enhance the usefulness of the device.

Coupled along with an impressive 3GB RAM and Adreno 330 GPU, the tablet is powerful and lag free and delivers great performance speed.  Users can run their favorite games and apps on the large display of the device smoothly and can multi task seamlessly.  Navigating around the interface and between apps is swift, fluid, and flawless on this device.

The entire tablet is fuelled by a non-removable Li-Po 6000 mAh battery that is capable of delivering around 10 hours of multimedia playback.  During intense use, the battery drains quickly and it also takes a bit longer to charge. The Battery Stamina Mode in the tablet helps to minimize the battery drain by automatically turning off the functions which are not necessary.

Camera and connectivity

There is an 8.1-megaixel rear camera in the tablet that features Exmor RS Sensor along with AF, HDR and panorama that is capable of capturing decent quality images when needed. Along with images, the camera can also record 1080p videos at 30fps.  For facilitating video chatting and taking selfies, a 2.2-megapixel HD shooter is also present on the front of the device.

Talking in terms of connectivity, the tablet comes packed with all your required connectivity options including GPRS, EDGE, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, WiFi Direct, dual band, DLNA, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth with A2DP, NFC , built in LTE/4G modem, MicroUSB 2.0 and GPS with AGPS and GLONASS.

Storage and other features

Packed in with 16/32GB onboard storage, the external storage of the tablet can be expanded up to 64GB using the microSD card slot. Therefore when saving your favorite images, videos, and other data on the device you will not have to worry about running out of space.

There is a collection of other interesting features loaded on the tablet. Its tap-to-wake gesture enables the user to wake up the tablet by simply double tapping on the screen. Various Sony apps come preinstalled with the device including Sony’s music and movie subscription service and a Walkman app.  There is a Smart Connect App provided by Sony that automatically turns on the Walkman App when plugging in headphones. The Sony Xperia Z2 tablet is also the first one to feature active noise cancelling technology which can be used with special headset.

Final Verdict

As a complete package, the Sony Xperia Z2 tablet is a smart and elegant looking, lightweight, slim device that comes with an impressive display and offers great performance. It will prove to be a top choice for business professionals who need to work or self-entertain on those hours they are not sitting at a desk.
