Huawei Technologies takes on the challenge of the India market by strategically partnering with local player Spice Mobiles for the launching of the S Huawei Ascend Y100 Android smartphone. This explains the change in name and the “S” obviously refers to Spice Mobiles. The Ascend Y100 is one of the 6 new smartphones by Huawei that were formally unveiled during the IFA 2012 tech show in Berlin. With the strategic partnership between Huawei Technologies and Spice Mobiles, the former is banking on the vast retail network of Spice Mobiles that cover key cities and towns like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi.
With this strategy, Huawei takes full advantage of the extensive market coverage of Spice Mobiles through its “Hotspot” retail outlets. And this translates to a better market position which puts the Huawei smartphones on equal footing with the main players in the low-end segment of the market, such as the Galaxy Pocket and Galaxy Y of Samsung.
The S Huawei Ascend Y100 is an entry-level device that is priced competitively. It is primarily designed to dominate the low-end segment of the market. And for a budget-friendly Android gadget, it comes off with an impressive set of features and specifications.
The S Huawei Ascend Y100 is powered by an 800MHz single core processor and this is matched by 256MB RAM. And while it does not necessarily deliver a knockout punch under its hood, it can certainly deliver the goods better than a significant number of gadgets within its class. It features a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen display with a 320 x 240p resolution. And while those figures may not give you the bragging rights, these are decent enough for a low-priced gadget. Thus, you get images that are relatively crisp and clear.
This Huawei gadget comes out of the box with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread preloaded. One of the pleasant surprises of the Ascend Y100 is that it is one discreet gadget even when it is ranged against the likes of TouchWiz by Samsung and Sense by HTC. The camera, at 2MP, may not be one of the brightest spots of the Android smartphone, but the good thing about it is that the graphics are pretty decent and the shutter is remarkably fast. The 512MB internal storage is complemented by a MicroSD slot for a 32GB expandable memory. This low-priced phone is truly an impressive choice as its set of features is topped by Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi and 3G HSDPA connectivity options.
Despite the low pricing, quality and performance were not compromised. For a cheap device like the S Huawei Ascend Y100, we have an attractive proposition that even the brand conscious buyers can hardly resist. Still, the question on the quality of low-priced gadgets remains to be the main hurdle and Spice Mobiles and Huawei should be able to demonstrate the durability, reliability and quality of Ascend Y100 Android smartphone.
